Basilica of Our Lady

Guelph, Ontario, Canada

In 2014, the Church of Our Lady Immaculate (now a Basilica) underwent extensive interior renovations. The organ, a 1919 Casavant, 3-manual, 44-rank, had been well maintained, though was starting to develop problems. The windchests had been converted to pitman action, and much leathering work had been previously done. The organ was largely tonally unaltered.

As a part of the interior renovation, the organ console and pipework, including the facade, were removed for cleaning and refurbishment. The console shell was completely stripped and refinished; the interior woodwork was rebuilt to accommodate new stop layout, and new OSI bone/ebony keyboards were installed. The organ would now run with a Classic Organ Works control system.

The pipes were cleaned and repaired, and the facade pipes repainted gold with silver mouths. The interior of the chamber was cleaned and painted. Felt and twill tape for racking was replaced. New blowers and tremulants were installed, and all chamber cabling was replaced.

The Basilica is a remarkable room, of European proportions, and now lets the organ sing in this fresh and vibrant space.
